2005-2006 TV season picks and pans
Today we will be dealing with one of my favorite subjects TV! Tonight I will give you my picks to succeed and fail in the upcoming season. In addition I will provide comments on current shows that are underrated and those who are way past their prime. Now then, On with the blog!
Shows with the best chance to succeed
- My Name is Earl (NBC): Not much of an inspired plot here, a guy wins the lottery, drops his ticket, almost dies, and gets a message from above from none other than Carson Daly! Then he devotes his life to doing good deeds as if he was grateful for a second chance. I was a bit skeptical when I heard this program was from one of the producers of Yes Dear one of the most silly and inane shows on television, but Earl looks like a winner with it's reliance on slapstick comedy and wholesome innocence it's plot provides.
- Bones (Fox): Fox's answer to CSI, the sexual tension between two good looking leads will not be the only thing keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. The only worry I have is that Fox will bury this show in a bad timeslot once American Idol returns in January.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS): This is also one of those programs I was skeptical about, and with good reason. Any show with Bob Saget and Neal Patrick Harris involved has got to be a dud. However, upon a closer look, I discovered TV Guide loved the show and with former writers for Letterman behind this one, at least it will try to be entertaining. As one of the shows on CBS's award winning Monday night lineup, there is no excuse why this show should fail.
- Three Wishes (NBC): Amy Grant and friends travel around small town America to make dreams come true for deserving folks. Will be an inspiration and a tear jerker for viewers. Although it is in a Friday Night slot it has little competition a should be the heartwarming hit of the year.
- Everybody Hates Chris (UPN): I saw a promo for this one a couple of weeks ago and roared with laugher. Based on comedian Chris Rock's childhood, it looks like it has enough of a combination of poignancy and raw humor that will entice viewer. Troubles is it is on UPN and against established hits Survivor and Joey. I believe that this program will attract enough of an audience to please UPN and may also put them on the map.
Duds of the Fall Season
1. Commander In Chief (ABC): Geena Davis has failed before and she will fail again with this rip off of the West Wing.
2. Freddie (ABC): Freddie Prinze= Lookin Good! Freddie Jr.=Lookin canceled! Prinze is a bad movie actor and will struggle in a television role as well.
3. The Night Stalker (ABC): I loved the original show with Darren McGavin, but history has shown us that remakes never make it (i.e Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Dark Shadows) CSI will put this show out of commission quickly.
4. Surface:(NBC): Nothing more than Lost under water. Will sink faster than Quicksand.
Shows that should be canceled
1. Grey's Anatomy (ABC): This ER ripoff only succeeded because it was on after Desperate housewives.
2. ER (NBC): Sherry Stringfield is the only member of the original cast left. I truly think this show ran out of ideas in 2000 or so.
3. Survivor (CBS): The show was never compelling or entertaining, hopefully people have grown tired of it and reality television in general.
4. Yes Dear (CBS): This show has every device I hate in a sitcom, cute kids, bumbling idiot Fathers, and enough cutesy writing to make me want to watch a Lifetime Movie instead. It is a remarkable achievement that this program has been on for 6 years!
5. America's Funniest Home Videos (ABC): There is only so much a person can take of people getting hit in the crotch and cute kids mugging for the camera.
6. The King of Queens (CBS): Fat jokes get tiring after awhile.
7. The Office (NBC): The Program heads at the peacock actually think this show is better than Scrubs? Hey guys, there is a reason why you are in 4th place among viewers, because you give them unfunny comedy like this.
And Finally!
The Most underrated show on television!
Scrubs: (NBC): The most original and freshest comedy on television today. It will return in January but NBC's reluctance to kill shows or spinoffs of shows that made them profitable (Joey) has cost the funniest show on television dearly. The disrespect given to this program is a sad tragedy in the television world and there ought to be a way to stop such methods.
That is all thanks for reading.
