Why I Hate Cell Phones

Can I be honest with you? There is a certain piece of electronic equipment that has taken over the world these days that I believe has corrupted this society as a whole. I am talking about the cell phone, the miniature cordless wonder that has made it easier to talk to people from anywhere in the world. This to me is a pretty novel concept. It is nice to know that there is a device that allows me to talk to a person if I am at a bus station waiting for a bus. Or at a crowded concert hall. There is however several problems with these things that lead me to believe that we have taken these things for granted.

First of all, I think cell phones are completely overused in every facet of society. I can see if there is an emergency and no pay phones are around, but we as a culture feel the need to use our phones at every opportunity. This is a concept that baffles me. What could be so important that you have to urge to call your friend or significant other when you know that they are busy working or in class. Most people who call just want to say hi and see what the other person is up to anyway. This is something that just could no wait until you were done doing something that was clearly more important than the phone call couldn't it?

Another thing that annoys me about cell phones is that no matter who you call the conservation always end up the same. Hello ....... Fine, where are you? ....... What are you doing? ...... uh-huh.... What are you doing later on?....... Okay, Can I join you? ........ Great, I'll see you later okay? .......... Alright, ....... See you later ...... yep, bye. Is it really necessary to have this conservation 10 times a day because we just have to talk to everyone we know? I certainly don't think so.

Lastly, what annoys me most about cell phones is that they seem to go off in public places at exactly the wrong moment. I'm in church not to long ago and it is that part of the mass where the change the communion to the body of Christ and someone's cell phone went off. That is so disrespectful, I can't imagine what the Lord thinks of that. Here I am trying to express myself in prayer and someone's phone is blasting the theme to Hawaii Five-O, put the phone on vibrate or turn it off for crying out loud. As a solution to the cell phone problem, I would love to see the service providers like Cingular and Verizon charge mucho dollars for service. That way, there is not a excuse for people to use it every waking moment of their lives.
